Would-Be Restaurant Will Be Torn Down, Turned Into a Park

The strange case of Haze Restaurant, Bar and Lounge is coming to a close.

Essentially an old house gussied up in goth black paint and gaudy decorations, Haze looks severely out of place between the Arlington Arts Center and a soon-to-be yoga studio (formerly Curves). It was apparently meant to be a lounge-y kind of a place, which could have brought some nightlife to the relatively dead section of Wilson Boulevard near the Virginia Square Metro, but it was brought down by some very poor planning.

BREAKING NEWS — Man Dies After Plunge From Rosslyn High-Rise

A man died after a seven story plunge from a broken window in a Rosslyn high-rise. Initial reports suggest it was a suicide.

The man landed on a brick courtyard outside of a cafe. A large crowd gathered as police placed a white sheet over the man’s body, which was surrounded by broken glass in clear view of witnesses.

BREAKING NEWS — Rescue Operation For Injured Worker on 14th Street Bridge

Update at 11:20 a.m. — Per DC Fire & EMS: The injured worker has been extricated and is being taken via fire boat to a waiting ambulance at the Columbia Island Marina. Most of the emergency vehicles on the bridge have cleared out, although the lane restrictions have not been lifted yet.

Update at 11:45 a.m. — All lanes on the bridge have reopened.

Arlington’s Red Light Cameras Start Issuing Fines At Midnight

If you run the wrong red light after midnight tonight, you’ll be getting a $50 ticket in the mail.

Arlington’s new red light cameras, which have been issuing warnings for the past month, will now be issuing fines. The infraction will be treated as a civil offense, meaning it won’t go on your driving record.

BGR The Burger Joint, Thai Restaurant Coming to Clarendon Center

BGR The Burger Joint and Burapa Thai Restaurant are the latest businesses to sign leases at the still under-construction development, which is expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of the year.

This will be BGR’s second Arlington location. The now-busy Lyon Village store, which opened earlier this year, is only a mile away from the planned Clarendon location.

End of the Rainbow Found — During yesterday’s sunny downpour in Pentagon City, we spotted the actual end of the rainbow. Turns out it’s the shuttered Crystal City Motel on Old Jefferson Davis Highway. Bad news for anyone wanting to search for a pot of gold: you’ll first have to scale the high fence around the decaying property.

Library Book Sale This Weekend — Central Library (1015 N. Quincy St.) is holding its two-day Friends of the Library Summer Book Sale this coming Friday and Saturday. The sale will take place outside, next to the garden and the tennis courts. See the Library Blog for more info.

Volunteer Opp: French Speaker Needed for Health Outreach

The Ethiopian Community Development Council is looking for a French speaker to communicate with recent immigrants about health issues. Specifically, the volunteer would help French-speaking African immigrants — mostly women — obtain screening for breast and colorectal cancer.

The organization, based near Columbia Pike, says the volunteer position would be ideal for a student or anyone else with a flexible schedule.

Mystery Construction Project Near Ray’s Hell Burger

This morning a reader asked about a “bizarre” construction project happening at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North Quinn Street, near Ray’s Hell Burger.

We dutifully checked it out and yes, it was pretty weird. First of all, you don’t typically see that much construction debris sitting out in the open near a main thoroughfare. When we arrived workers were busy laying brick next to the building and doing some sort of metal work inside. We asked the workers what was being built — and got no response.

Prospects For Change-of-Government Referendum Dimming

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that the Committee for a Better Arlington will reach the mark needed to get a proposed change to Arlington’s form of government on the November ballot.

With approximately 250 pages to go during their “first pass” through the 761 petition sheets submitted, county election personnel say they’ve have counted 8,123 valid signatures. A total of 14,350 valid signatures are needed.

New Sprayground Hours in Effect

This year, budget cuts force the parks department to reduce Monday through Thursday summer hours from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Now, the hours have been revised to make sure parents have the option of using the parks in the morning, before the heat of the day reaches its peak.

Now, park hours will alternate between 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Each park will still be closed one day per week.

Bozzelli’s Italian Deli Coming to Crystal City

Bozzelli’s Italian Deli will be opening next to the Starbucks at 2600 Crystal Drive, on the ground floor of the Concord apartment building. It will serve the same fresh Italian fare — subs, salads, pasta and pizza — that has generated some intense customer loyalty at its original Springfield, Va. location.

A building permit and a “coming soon” sign are posted at the front of the future storefront.

Lost Chaplin Film Re-Debuts at Slapsticon — The Slapsticon film festival, held in Rosslyn over the weekend, debuted a silent film with a short cameo by a then-obscure comedian: Charlie Chaplin. The 1914 film was thought to have been lost to history, but was recently discovered at an antiques sale in Michigan. ABC News reported on the film’s re-debut on Sunday.
