District Taco to Open First Brick-and-Mortar Restaurant

Owner Osiris Hoil says the fast food-style restaurant will be casual and family-oriented, with a front counter and plenty of tables. Since the storefront already has a full kitchen and other restaurant necessities, Hoil hopes to open the place as soon as September 1. (Update on 10/14: The opening is now said to be set for the first week in November.)

The larger kitchen will supply the District Taco stand with greater quantities of fresher ingredients, Hoil said. The stand has been a victim of it’s own success recently, running out of food just about every day.

DEVELOPING — Power Outage Hits Reagan National Airport

Officials at Reagan National Airport are “anticipating major delays and cancellations” as a result of a power outage affecting Terminals B and C.

The outage is affecting ticket counters and concessions, airport spokesperson Courtney Mickalonis said. Power has been restored at TSA security screening stations.

Crime Report: Moved Items Edition

All in all it was a relatively quiet week for the Arlington Police Department. As if to illustrate the point, here’s one particularly small town-ish item that made it onto the weekly crime report.

BURGLARY 07/13/10, 1800 block of N. Culpeper Street. Between midnight on July 1, and 8 am on July 13, an unknown person entered a closed porch and moved items. There are no known suspects.

Slapsticon Returns — Slapsticon, the vintage comedy film festival, is returning to Arlington with a full slate of films from the silent and early sound eras. The four-day festival, held at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theater, kicks off at 1:00 this afternoon. The highlight of the festival will come on Saturday, when The Thief Catcher, a lost Charlie Chaplin film that was recently found at an antiques sale in Michigan, re-premieres on the big screen.

Change-of-Government Petitions Submitted

Supporters of a proposed change in the county’s form of government submitted their petitions to the Clerk of the Arlington County Circuit Court this morning, the Sun Gazette first reported.

A formal hand-off of the petitions from the clerk to Arlington County General Registrar Linda Lindberg, whose department will verify the signatures, will take place at 9:00 tomorrow morning, the county said in a statement. Supporters need 14,350 valid signatures to get the proposal on the November ballot.

Arlington Youth Baseball Team Claims District Title

The Arlington team bounced back from a 1-11 loss against Vienna, beating the same Vienna team 10-4 to capture the district title.

“We were able to re-focus and win the game with strong pitching, great defense, and some timely hits and bunts,” coach Greg Wigton said. “We scored 8 runs in the 4th inning, and added 2 more in the 7th.”

Board Recognizes Yorktown Grad Killed in Iraq

Capt. Michael Cassidy, a married father of two young girls, died last month in Mosul, Iraq. Cassidy, 41, was on his second tour of duty. He served the Army as a medic and a physician’s assistant.

“By all accounts he was a sweet and sensitive soul who demonstrated unbelievable and serious determination in his quest to serve his fellow veterans,” Board Chairman Jay Fisette said.

Funding for New Rosslyn Metro Entrance Approved

The Rosslyn station, Northern Virginia’s busiest, will be getting three high speed, high-capacity elevators, new fare collection equipment and an underground mezzanine with a dedicated Commuter Store.

The new entrance to the station will be built between North Moore Street and Lynn Street, across the street from the existing Metro entrance. The old station entrance will remain in service even after the new one is completed.
