Wag More Dogs Seeks Appeal of Mural Lawsuit

In February, a U.S. District Court Judge dismissed a lawsuit against Arlington County filed by Wag More Dogs (2606 S. Oxford Street). With the assistance of the the Institute for Justice, a Ballston-based libertarian public interest law firm, Wag More Dogs owner Kim Houghton had claimed that the county’s crackdown on the store’s colorful wall mural, which faced the Shirlington dog park, was unconstitutional.

Today, Houghton and the Institute for Justice announced that they have asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to take the case — which revolves around the method by which Arlington County decides what is ‘art’ and what is an impermissible commercial sign.

Airport Altercation at Reagan National

The alleged scuffle started around 8:40 a.m. when one of the women inadvertently struck the other with a suitcase, according to airport spokeswoman Courtney Mickalonis. The woman who was holding the suitcase later told airport police that the woman she struck then stood up and hit her several times.

While airport police were escorting the suitcase holder to the Arlington County Magistrate’s Office to swear a warrant against the other woman, the alleged attacker claimed that she was injured, Mickalonis said. Arlington County paramedics were called to treat her.

Cafe Caturra Coming to Arlington Ridge

A Midlothian, Va.-based coffee shop/wine bar/soup-salad-and-sandwich restaurant is coming to the Arlington Ridge Shopping Center (2901 South Glebe Road).

Interior construction is underway on Cafe Caturra, located in a storefront once occupied by a Blockbuster video store. The store’s arrival coincides with a pedestrian-oriented renovation of the 85,000 square foot shopping center, which is anchored by a Giant supermarket.

Ebbin Blasts Cuccinelli on Net Neutrality

Ebbin, who’s running for state Senate, has released a statement blasting Cuccinelli for his latest high-profile legal saber rattling: a plan to sue the Federal Communications Commission in a challenge to “net neutrality” policies.

Net neutrality is a principle that seeks to prohibit internet service providers (ISPs) from treating certain internet content different from other content. For instance, net neutrality would prevent an ISP from blocking popular but bandwidth-hogging video streaming web sites like Netflix and YouTube. The FCC adopted a set of net neutrality-inspired regulations in December.

Highland Park/Overlee Knolls Historic District Created

Officials have added a historic district around the Highland Park/Overlee Knolls neighborhood to the Virginia Landmarks Register. The historic district is one of 16 sites recently added to the register, according to the Associated Press.

The district is bordered by N. Quantico Street to the west, 22nd Street N. to the north, N. Lexington Street and N. McKinley Road to the east, and I-66 to the south.

Obstacles Overcome, High School Continuation Students Graduate

Newly-minted high school graduate Rachel Wilburn was a two-time high school dropout with a kid and another on the way when she entered the Langston High School Continuation Program. This morning, she was given the honor of addressing about 150 fellow Langston and Arlington Mill high school continuation graduates at the Washington-Lee auditorium.

“Despite everything that has come our way, there is a voice in our unconscious minds that said ‘I will not give up on myself,’” she said. “I thank God for giving us the strength to make it through this.”
