Rethink Energy: New LED Box of Bulbs Available

This regularly-scheduled sponsored Q&A column is written by the Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy team (AIRE). This county program helps you make smart energy decisions that save you money and leaves a lighter footprint on the environment. Got a question? Email us at [email protected]!

Buying a light bulb used to be a no-brainer. Now it’s a brain teaser — the transition to more energy-efficient lighting means choosing from a dazzling array of products. There are many options, many symbols, and trade vernacular that can be hard to decipher (LED, CFL, halogen, lumens, Kelvin, CRI), not to mention all of the various brands.

The Rethink Energy Program in partnership with Arlington Public Library is making it easier for Arlingtonians to switch to LED bulbs.

Now, with your Arlington County Library card you can borrow a case of various LED bulbs to test at home to find the ones that work best for you. The box includes 10 different lights. All of the bulbs in the box are dimmable.

Lights include:

  • Standard bulbs of different brightness levels and colors
  • Track lighting or recessed can fixture bulbs
  • Chandelier bulbs (small and regular base)
  • Outdoor flood light bulb
  • Bathroom vanity bulb
  • Three-Way bulb
  • Night light

If you are looking for the “Cliffs Notes” for LED bulbs, check out our LED Lighting guide.  This guide will give you all the info you need to know about LED brightness, color, energy use, and more.

Use this link to place a hold on the LED bulb sampler kit today.

Want a free LED? Mark you calendar for the Home Show and Garden Expo on April 22 at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center for a free LED bulb. Bulbs will be given out at the main stage at 3:45 p.m., during the Green Home Choice awards ceremony.

The reason is threefold.

First, using safe cleaning products ensures toxic chemicals won’t leak into waterways or harm wildlife if disposed of improperly.

Second, it’s better for you and your family. Fragrant chemicals in surface cleaners can expose you to a similar amount of pollutant particles as a busy city road, New Scientist reported.
