Nate Silver, today’s most influential statistician and founder of the award-winning data website FiveThirtyEight, will join Tyler Cowen for a wide-ranging, intellectual dialogue as part of the Conversations with Tyler series.

Silver has been named one of the “World’s Most Influential People” by Time for his entrepreneurship in data journalism and astoundingly accurate method of predicting elections. Silver first gained national attention during the 2008 presidential election when he correctly predicted the results of the presidential winner in 49 states. In 2012, he predicted all 50 states.

Silver’s accomplishments in data analysis go beyond elections. A polymath, his interests vary from economics to sports to poker. Prior to FiveThirtyEight, he established his credentials as a baseball statistician and writer for Baseball Prospectus. Silver developed a widely acclaimed system called PECOTA, which forecasts the performance and career development of Major League Baseball players.

His book, The Signal and The Noise: Why Most Predictions Fail – But Some Don’t, is a New York Times bestseller and among the Wall Street Journal’s Best Nonfiction Books of 2012.

On November 30, 2015, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority hired a new General Manager. He takes the helm of an operation that began operating the
first phase of Metrorail in 1976. Forty years later, it serves 91 stations, has 117 miles of track and operates
1,500 buses that serve the national capital area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What is his vision for Metro? How will Metro deal with the current problems it faces and plan for the future?
Bring your questions and concerns about the Metro system as we engage in a conversation with the new General Manager.
