BalletNova presents its annual spring repertory performance May 3 – 5, 2019. This year’s performance features a new production of La Fille Mal Gardée by guest artist Matthew Powell, Martha Graham’s iconic “Steps in the Street” performed by BalletNova Conservatory Division students and Gin Dance Company’s “L.E.O.”
La Fille Mal Gardée
In this new production of La Fille Mal Gardée, guest artist Matthew Powell presents a comedic ballet that pits mother versus daughter on the topic of marrying for love or money. A hilarious love story with a playful cast of characters makes for a performance not to be missed! Perfect for all ages.
Gin Dance Company’s Artistic Director Shu-Chen Cuff was inspired by the works of Leonard Bernstein, L.E.O. is an acronym for Listen – listen deeply into your inner beliefs; Enrich – enrich your soul and Optimize – make the best out of what you have. This work stands behind Leonardo Bernstein’s philosophy that we all do our part to make the world a better place.
Steps in the Street
During a two-week residency with the Martha Graham Dance Company, BalletNova Conservatory Students learned the choreography of Steps in the Street from former Martha Graham principal dancer Elizabeth Auclair. Graham created this work in the midst of the Great Depression that uses the power of movement to explore themes of isolation and desperation still relevant today.
