November 8 (next Wednesday) is National Harvey Wallbanger Day. Bars in DC and across the country are celebrating the iconic disco-era cocktail by adding it to their cocktail menu or, in some cases, creating a riff on the original recipe of vodka, orange juice, and a float of Galliano L’Autentico!
The Story of Harvey Wallbanger:
Harvey’s namesake cocktail was a staple in US bars throughout the 1960’s and ’70s. Legend has it that the cocktail was named for a Manhattan Beach, CA surf star who had a few too many after losing a surfing competition. His inability to leave the bar without stumbling into walls earned him a reputation and a nickname, and inspired the drink. The character reached enormous popularity to the extent when in 1972 presidential election, Harvey Wallbanger turned out to be the #1 write-in candidate. Today Harvey Wallbangers are being enjoyed in their original form, and in unique twists on the classic by a new generation of drinkers.
