Opponent: Favola Should Resign from County Board

State Senate candidate Jaime Areizaga-Soto says his Democratic primary opponent, Barbara Favola, should resign her position on the County Board.

Areizaga-Soto told the Blue Virginia web site that it is “not ethical” for Favola to accept tens of thousands of dollars from developers who have recently had business before the county. She “should resign from the board or return the money immediately,” Areizaga-Soto said.

Earlier this year, Favola told ARLnow.com that her vote “can’t be bought.”

“People are contributing to me because they respect me and have confidence in me,” she said. “Everything here is reported, there is nothing illegal about what I have received.”

Favola and Areizaga-Soto are running for the 31st District state Senate seat, which is being vacated by the retiring Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 23.

      Sadly, THIS

  • jack

Someone please teach that man how to smile. What he’s doing there looks painful!

  • G Clifford Prout

That smile still creeps me out. It’s a cross between a child molester and a jack-o-lantern.

    • Flipper

His smile looks like the commercial pudding face.

      • Truthteller

Can we stop with the stupid perjoratives about facial expressions?

  • YTK

    how about Tejada instead???

    • Daniel

    • NauckNeighbor

I’ll second that. Perhaps if Soto was running on a “Get Tejada out of Office” campaign I actually might get behind it.

        +10, NauckNeighbor

Anyone notice how Favola always wears a purple jacket at the county board meetings? Almost every time.

    • Stu Pendus

      Yes. Yes I have.

  • TGEoA

    Take Zimmie with you!

  • BerryBerryCold

I’m thinking resignation is too light. Maybe an investigation into possible graft?

  • bb

    Not bought… rented maybe?

  • Brendan

Favola should resign her position if she’s going to be taking uncapped donations from people/companies with business in front of the county.

  • ArlForester

    His windsor knot is atrocious.

  • doodly

So is he not taking any donations from anyone who might have business before the state senate?

    • SeanO

Mebbe he is & mebbe he isn’t. He quit his job at the USAID (he was appointed by Pres Obama) to run for State Senate.

  • charlie

if this is all Jaime can grab onto … I’m sorry.
There are plenty of ways to beat Babs. This isn’t it.
Sad. Maybe he is a republican and just doesn’t know how to find issues that resonate with Arlington voters.

    • Stu Pendus

I think this is a good first salvo. Lets see what else he has over the next two months.

Are there going to be any debates?

      • Captain Obvious

        1) If you read the full interview, you’ll see that he has a number of excellent points about Favola’s record on progressive issues. 2) Yes, there will be a debate.

  • GM

Can he first promise to resign from filling my mailbox with flyers every other day? Please?

  • Jim

I agree Favola should return the money or resign.

  • Jim Webster

What a cheap shot. This guy just lost any chance of getting my vote.

    • Darryl

How is that a cheap shot? She received $25,000 from a developer. Is that not a conflict of interest and unethical? If anything that seems like an “expensive” shot.

    • Truthteller

Jim how is that a cheap shot.?… It seems supported by the evidence. A developer having given $25,000 taking the chairmanship of her campaign is disturbing. This seems to me to be a potentially serious conflict of interest.

In terms of web stuff… interesting they both use the same software company (NGP VAN) for fundraising. I guess this happens sometimes for D primaries at the state legislature/senate level but still kind of amusing.

One question though… Why did Favola hire a firm based outside the district to do her web design? Does Favola believe that there are no good web companies in the 31st district? Doesn’t sound like she’s supporting high tech jobs here to me…

    • BerryBerryCold

Web design isn’t really that “high tech.”

      • Salmon of Capistrano

eh. i’m going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there…. though it does depend on the site. some sites are insanely complex and some are just blehtml.

either way she doesn’t support tech companies in the district…

On an unrelated note, there is STILL a Patrick Murphy for Congress sign up at the 50 ramp onto Washington Blvd towards Pentagon City. Can someone from the Arlington Republicans finally take it down?

  • BoringDan

Years ago, I spoke before the board with my neighbors about a neighborhood/developer issue. Of the five board members at the time, she seemed to be the least interested in what my neighbors and I had to say. Her body language displayed “annoyed and you are wasting my time.” My perception of her is that she was aligned with the developer and I have not voted for her since.

  • Civic Activist

I agree with Ms. Favola that her vote “cannot be bought”; it is merely rented on a site plan by site plan basis.
