Significant Delays reported at DCA

Weather and an equipment outage are both causing air traffic to back up at Reagan National Airport.

A foggy condition referred to as “low ceiling,” which causes decreased visibility, is apparently combining with at least some of the airport’s approach lights being out of service.

Currently, DCA lists “excessive delays” on its webpage. Average wait times are reportedly hovering around 45 minutes. That’s better than some of the multi-hour delays being experienced in other parts of the Northeast due to the low ceiling.

Be sure to check your flight status with your airline before heading to the airport, or check the FAA’s online flight delay information page.

Massive diversions around the 11am hour to all over .. BWI, PIT, Richmond, and many others.

Tricky situation there today. Cloud ceilings and visibility too low to use Runway 19 (the southbound approach down the river), so they’re stuck with the northbound Runway 1, whose approach lights are out of service. That combined with a sporty tailwind on the approach is causing some holding and missed approaches, hence the earlier diversions and now the delays…

Missed approaches are fun at DCA.

        Huh? Tailwind on landing?

I’m a pilot with a major and I fly out of DCA. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

i’m not a pilot either and I know that DCA you always fly INTO the tailwind otherwise you are too fast.

Looks like the winds were anywhere from calm to S at 12 knots yesterday. Guess I don’t know what I’m talking about.

But rwy1 would be the preferred choice in IFR conditions. It has a CATII approach and radar minimums down to 163 feet. They would much rather land north than from south. Frankly based on the METARs I am surprised they had so much trouble today.

After being delayed, my flight landed at Reagan at approx. 5 PM on Jan. 23. Never had such a hard landing in my life. Tremendous noise and extremely hard (i.e., forceful) touch down. Any reason why this would have been the case?

aww poor babys, the beach will just have to wait a few more hours.

…or that last visit to see grandma before she passes will have to wait, or the operation, or the big job interview, or the visit to see the new baby, or…

      Most flights aren’t frivolous luxuries.
