Local School Holds Caps Rally — “It was all about the Washington Capitals at Cardinal Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia, on Wednesday, when the school held an hourlong pep rally for the Caps, complete with cheers, hockey lessons from Caps staff and a visit from mascot Slapshot.” [WTOP]

County Looks to the Future — “The future is now, at least based on the responses received to date as part of the Arlington County government’s ‘Arlington 2050’ planning initiative. As part of the initiative to plan for what the county might be in a quarter-century’s time, residents have been asked to fill out ‘postcards from the future,’ telling Arlington leaders of 2024 what they’d like the community to look like.” [Gazette Leader]

Police Memorial Day Approaches — “The Arlington County Police Department and Arlington County Sheriff’s Office will pay tribute to Arlington law-enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty during an observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day. The event, which is open to the public, will be held on Friday, May 10 at 8 a.m. in the plaza at the Arlington County Justice Center, 1425 North Courthouse Road.” [Gazette Leader]

Groups Lauds Arts Grant Funding — “The non-profit organization Embracing Arlington Arts applauds the County Board for approving additional funds for the important Arts Grants program… the adopted budget includes $250,000 of new funding to support the Arts Grant Program. This funding is comprised of $150,000 in ongoing funds and $100,000 in one-time funds.” [Facebook]

Familiar Face to Coach at WHS — “By being hired as the new head girls basketball coach, Marcus McKinney is again fully invested at Wakefield High School, not splitting his time elsewhere. McKinney has been a full-time teacher at Wakefield for 26 years and graduated from the Arlington school in 1989. For many past winter seasons, McKinney has been a head or assistant basketball coach at other metro-area high schools.” [Gazette Leader]

GMU Unveils Rebranding — “George Mason University unveiled a completely redesigned logo as the capstone of its three-year-long comprehensive rebrand. The new look, which will include a single logo for the university and its athletics program, asserts George Mason’s emerging identity as a national top 50 public university and Virginia’s top-ranked university for innovation and upward mobility, as well as the commonwealth’s largest, most innovative, and most diverse university.” [George Mason University]

Metro Passes New Budget — “Metro’s Board of Directors approved a $4.8 billion capital and operating budget which largely maintains bus and rail service levels when the new budget year begins on July 1. With investments from around the region, Metro will be able to continue to provide great transit service customers are familiar with today.” [WMATA]
