Arlington County Sheriff Beth Arthur will make history next week, when she’s sworn in as the first female president of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA).

Hundreds of sheriffs, deputy sheriffs and special guests from around the state will attend the VSA conference in Virginia Beach, where Sheriff Arthur will be sworn in on Tuesday (September 11).

The VSA currently has 8,600 members, and acts as the primary voice for Virginia sheriffs before boards, commissions and the various legislative bodies of Virginia. Additionally, VSA provides information about emerging law enforcement issues, corrections, crime prevention and other topics as related to the sheriff’s office.

The VSA is known for its consistent requests to the governor and General Assembly to increase salaries, enhance retirement and improve conditions for deputy sheriffs.

Arthur was elected First Vice President of the VSA for the 2011-2012 year. Her term as President will last for one year after she’s sworn in next week.

Regardless of gender, all sheriffs should wear cowboy boots, with pant legs tucked partially inside.

Hasn’t every president of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association before her made history too? Or is there no record of their swearing in?

    • Arlingtoon

She’s the first woman to hold the position.

      Neat lady — Congratulations Beth!

Can we call her B. Arthur?

    • Maxine Lunn

Try it – if she doesn’t like it…..you’ll know it. 🙂

Only if she wears her pants like Andy.

As a father of three daughters:
    Congratulations, Beth Arthur.
Another step for equal gender opportunity.
And Kudos to the predominantly male sheriffs for recognizing Sheriff Arthur’s talents and expertises and electing her.

Anyone know why we still have a sheriff? We already have normal police, so is it the sheriff’s job to chase the castle rustlers from PGC? We haven’t had any gun fights lately, so I assume she’s doing a good job?

      From the VSA site:

Sheriffs are responsible for a wide range of criminal justice related activities, including law enforcement, jail administration, inmate transportation and court services.

Sheriffs are the only locally elected constitutional law enforcement officers in Virginia, as provided in the Constitution of Virginia. Accordingly, the duties of the sheriff are not spelled out in any one document, law or regulation. Sheriffs are responsible for primary local law enforcement in all counties without a police force, but also have responsibility for law enforcement in all localities in which they serve. In eighty-six of Virginia counties, the sheriff is the primary local law enforcement agency, responding to all of the crime calls and calls for service from citizens. The Virginia General Assembly has provided assistance to sheriffs in performing this function by providing one law enforcement deputy sheriff for each 1,500 population.

In Arlington, the Sheriff’s Office operates the detention center and courthouse, and provides for the service of civil papers and criminal arrest warrants such as failure to appear and other traditionally non-police matters.
