Police and sheriff's deputies respond to a barricade situation in Crystal City (photo courtesy @vtspaeth)More than a dozen police units spent part of the afternoon at an apartment building on the 300 block of S. 23rd Street in Crystal City, where a man barricaded himself inside and made threats.

A sheriff’s deputy approached the 39-year-old man’s apartment around noon in an attempt to serve an eviction notice. According to police, the man threatened the deputy, as well as himself, and then barricaded himself in the apartment.

Police evacuated the neighboring apartments and set up a command post in one of the units, where they were able to talk with the man on the phone. The man came out of his apartment more than an hour later and police took him into custody. He was transported to Virginia Hospital Center for a mental evaluation.

Once the man exited his apartment, police searched it and found the shotgun the man had referred to when threatening the sheriff’s deputy.

It is unclear if the man will be charged. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

That explains the armoured car prowling the streets of Crys City. Anyone see ArlCo ONE overhead?

    • Charles

What exactly is a police “unit”? One officer? One car full of officers? A precinct?

  • RD

why would anyone want to willingly be barricaded in crystal city?

  • KalashniKEV

Somebody get that guy some affordable housing…

    • CourthouseChris

Just another responsible gun owner protecting himself against jack-booted government thugs huh Kev?

      • KalashniKEV

Not quite. Actually, he sounds like one of your crowd…

        • drax

Sure, one of his crowd. Doesn’t sound like you at all. Sure, Kev.

          • Quoth the Raven

why would anyone want to willingly be in crystal city?

    • ARL’er

      Why wouldn’t they?

    • ARL-VA

Or is it not considered hip enough? Not enough drunk 20-somethings every Thursday, Friday and Saturday?

It has relatively low crime rates, enough restaurants and shopping without being as loud as Clarendon or Gallery Place, good recreational and outdoor fitness opportunities and convenient access to downtown D.C. and the airport.

I have lived here 25 years and have yet to see ONE fa-rigging crystal. Please tell me where they are.

    • CourthouseChris

It refers to an early building in the area that had an elaborate crystal chandelier, called the Crystal House. The house and its chandelier are long gone.

      • ArlingTony

The Crystal House is gone! Then what are those 2 buildings right off of Eads I walk by everyday on my way to the metro? Is it some sort of optical illusion? I’d pick a better mirage than bland brown brick high-rises.

        • CourthouseChris

Are the Archstone apartments of the same name truly the eponymous Crystal House? If that’s the case then that’s pretty sad. Seriously, that place needs a new name if it’s named after those bland apartment buildings.

    • Kolohe

I’m pretty sure there’s more than one Crystal working at the Restaurant.

      • CourthouseChris

        Your answer is better.

    • Id

Semegel from Lord of the Rings has them . . . they are precious . . .

  • Coraline

this crystal conversation is making my day! what does it all mean? life that is.
