The Arlington County Police Department is launching a summer community engagement series this weekend.

The goal is to build the department’s relationship with the public. Headlining the series is a pair of kid-oriented events — an outdoor game day and a movie marathon.

The “Police Playoffs” game day was to take place from noon to 2 p.m. today at Virginia Highlands Park (1600 S. Hayes Street) but the event was postponed until Friday, Aug. 23 due to rainy weather.

Next month, kids will be able to play basketball, soccer, football and board games with the police. Sports equipment and games will be provided.

Tomorrow — Saturday, July 13 — the department is set to host a movie marathon from noon to 3 p.m. at the Courthouse Library (2100 Clarendon Blvd). The PG-rated “Paranorman” and “Kubo and the Two Strings” will be shown and free popcorn and drinks will be served.

Next month, ACPD will host a trivia night at Ireland’s Four Courts pub in Courthouse from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Trivia questions will focus on policing topics like criminology and alcohol safety.

Two days later another “Police Playoffs” is scheduled, open to all ages. The event will go from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Lacey Woods Park (1200 N. George Mason Drive). Participants under the age of 18 must have a chaperone who is over 21, ACPD said.
