Yorktown team wins big in football for a second straight week

It took a bit, but the Yorktown Patriots have compiled strong back-to-back overall winning performances for the first time this season, according to their head coach.

The football team’s latest victory was a 39-7 over the visiting McLean Highlanders in an Oct. 10 Liberty District high-school game.

Yorktown routed the Centreville Wildcats, 34-7, the previous week. The victories give Yorktown a 5-2 overall record and second-place 2-1 mark in the district.

Against McLean, Yorktown gained 343 total yards and held McLean to only 44, including minus nine in the first half.

“Our defense was really strong and we mixed things up well on offense,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said. “Our quarterback [Drew Morgan] really played well. He was poised completing a lot of short passes. We ran the ball well, too.”

Morgan was 12 of 13 passing for 137 yards, and threw three touchdown passes. Two of the scoring throws, of nine and 15 yards, went to Brady Owens, who caught five passes for 45 yards. The other TD was 25 yards to Sammy Keiser.

Yorktown’s other scores came on runs by Coby Casalengo and Nate Randles. Max Yoon kicked field goals of 32 and 35 yards and three extra points.

Yorktown’s leading rusher was Casalengo with 66 yards. Alex Hans ran for 48, Max Troiano for 45, Finn Luca for 31, Randles for 13 and Jordan Romero Gutierrez for 11.

Luca caught three passes for 16 yards, Troiano two for 32 and Hans had one for 19. Luca also had a 42-yard punt return.

“I liked how we did different things well on offense,” Hanson said.

Yorktown did not turn the ball over and had just two penalties, which is low for a team that often has multiple penalties.

On special teams, Yorktown’s Bobby Shea blocked a punt, and he recovered a fumble on defense.
