Three of Arlington’s four high-school football teams in action this week

The high-school football season continues this week for three of Arlington’s four teams, with the other idle.

The undefeated and Liberty District-leading Washington-Liberty Generals (7-0, 3-0) are off with a bye this week. Their season resumes, Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. with a home game against their district rival McLean Highlanders (3-3, 0-2).

The Bishop O’Connell Knights (1-5), Wakefield Warriors (2-5, 0-3) and Yorktown Patriots (5-2, 2-1) are in action Friday night, Oct. 18, with 7 p.m. league games.

O’Connell is on the road in Maryland playing its first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference contest this fall against the St. Mary’s Ryken Knights (4-2, 1-0). O’Connell is coming off its first win of the season and looks to snap a six-game losing streak against WCAC rivals spanning two seasons.

Wakefield plays on the road against the Marshall Statesmen (5-2, 2-1) in a Liberty District clash. Wakefield has lost 15 straight district games over three seasons.

Yorktown looks to up its winning streak to three when it plays on the road against the Langley Saxons (6-1, 2-1) in Liberty District play. Yorktown is tied for second in the district with Langley and Marshall.

“Langley is having another good season. It will be a tough game, probably close again,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said.

Yorktown and Langley have played competitive games in recent years, with the Patriots winning, 31-28, last fall and the teams splitting two games (one in the region playoffs) in 2022.
