Female competitors will take the spotlight for the remainder of the Virginia High School League’s 2024 golf season.
Thirteen players from Arlington schools are among 70 throughout Northern Virginia that will participate in a state-tournament qualifying event at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton. Then, on Monday, Oct. 28, those who earned berths will play in the VHSL’s Girls State Open, for all enrollment classifications combined, at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
The lowest-scoring 15 percent of the players in the field at the Twin Lakes qualifier earn state berths.
Among those 13 entered from Arlington, Washington-Liberty High School senior Malia Perry and Yorktown High’s Maddie Cameron enjoyed probably the most individual success during the co-ed regular season and playoffs.
Perry helped the W-L team win the Liberty District tournament, finish second in the 6D North Region tourney, then place fifth in the Class 6 state competition. In those tournaments, Perry had scores of 81-76–157 for a top-15 finish in the district, 83-81-164 (region) and 88 (state). She carded a 9-hole score of 43 in helping the Generals win the season-opening Arlington County match against the Yorktown Patriots and Wakefield Warriors.
Cameron had a total of 41 in the county match, carded 78-79–157 to finish in the top 15 in the district, and scored 86-83-169 in the region. Perry’s teammate Bella Menn also will play in the state qualifier.
Participating from Wakefield will be Eliana Porcida and Samantha Phipps.
There are seven other players from Yorktown in the qualifier: Ginger Beall, Caitlin Wright, Malena Cardinale, Ainsley Gary, Ellie McCracken, Madeline Rubenstein and Maren Akst.
The Girls State Open will conclude the VHSL’s 2024 fall golf season. In order to qualify for the event, a player had to record a score of 45 or lower in a nine-hole competition at some point in preceding matches this season.
