Washington-Liberty girls first in showcase cross-country meet

Led by a tight pack of runners, the Washington-Liberty Generals won a recent showcase cross-country meet.

The high-school team tallied 152 points to finish first in the girls elite race at the Oct. 19 Virginia Showcase meet in Mechanicsville, near Richmond.

Washington-Liberty’s first five runners finished from 13th to 50th place on the 5,000-meter upper course at Pole Green Park.

The Generals’ top runner was senior Alba Edsall in 13th in 19:17.4. Washington-Liberty sophomore Meg Lubas was 30th (19:51.5), junior Mina Dowler 31st (19:52.3), senior Therese Johansson 43rd (20:10.3) and senior Ella Kaplan 50th (20:13.2).

Also for W-L, senior Katherine Floom was 54th (20:17.6) and senior Sienna Williams 57th (20:21.6).

In the boys elite race, Washington-Liberty finished 15th, led by junior Morgan Fritz in 49th (16:47) and sophomore Jackson Fowler in 63rd (16:53).

In the boys featured showcase race at the meet, Washington-Liberty senior Emmett Englehardt finished 17th in the 15:11.6. He was the only W-L runner in that race. The winning time was 14:47.6.

Englehardt won three previous meets this season, including the Arlington County championship.

For the 25th-place Bishop O’Connell Knights boys team, Lance Jayme finished 75th (17:04.4) in the elite race. In the girls elite race, O’Connell was 29th and was led by Grace Fumich in 58th (20:22.9).
