With another blowout victory, the Washington-Liberty Generals remained undefeated at 8-0 with two games remaining in the 2024 high-school football regular season.
The host, Liberty District leading and defending champion Generals defeated the McLean Highlanders, 47-8, Friday night (Oct. 26) in a league contest to remain atop the standings with a 4-o mark.
McLean fell to 3-5, 0-4 with its fourth straight loss.
Washington-Liberty’s point total has now been in the 40s in seven of its eight contests, with 28 in the other.
In the win over McLean, Generals’ senior quarterback Matthew Abramson led the way by throwing five touchdown passes covering 86 yards. He completed 23 passes for 288 yards.
Three of the scoring tosses went to Jon Malatesta, who caught 11 passes for 107 yards. Zach Meehan and Sean Guffey had the other TD receptions.
Guffey had six catches for 122 yards, David Toepel caught five for 42, Meehan two for 25 and Trevor Fullen one for 26. David Toepel had a 10-yard touchdown run on a wide receiver sweep and Guffey scored on an interception return.
Malatesta completed a 44-yard wide-receiver option pass to Guffey. Backup quarterback Jackson Colgan was 4 of 5 passing for 10 yards. Felipe Dieguez booted six extra points.
The Generals were awarded a safety when the McLean punter stepped out of the end zone jumping to catch a high snap.
Brayden Black led the rushing attack with 56 yards, Abramson had 31 and Ben Hughes 12. Malatesta had 96 yards in kick returns.
Washington-Liberty led 33-8 at halftime and the Generals gained 445 total yards.
On defense and special teams for W-L, Hughes had two sacks and was a tackling leader, along with Black, Guffey, Jackson Bolfek, Ryan Dodini, Connor Hurren and Jeremiah Saunders. Hurren and Henry Fonseca Gutierrez (sack) each had a fumble recovery, Thomas Fowler had an interception and Dillon Hathorn added a sack. Guffey broke up a pass.
The Generals stand 8-0 for the first time since 1956, when the school was named Washington-Lee and the football team compiled a 10-0 regular-season record.
The Generals next play the Langley Saxons on the road Nov. 2 in a key district clash. Langley is 7-1 overall and second in the district at 3-1.
NOTES: Washington-Liberty has won eight straight games over two seasons against district rivals . . . In the 15 seasons Washington-Liberty and McLean have competed for the Champions Cup Trophy in the annual regular-season meeting between the squads, the Generals now lead in wins 8-7.
