Sen. Tim Kaine greets voters in Arlington in final turnout push

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) made an appearance at the Walter Reed Community Center in Arlington today (Tuesday) as the push for voter turnout enters its final stretch.

With one week to go until Election Day, Kaine and Arlington Democrats Chair Steve Baker expressed optimism about their numbers so far but said they aren’t taking their foot off the gas.

“Early voting numbers are looking good, and they just — they send a message that people are energized,” Kaine told ARLnow. “It’s a good thing for democracy, regardless of the outcome.”

So far, about one in three registered voters in Arlington have cast ballots either early or by mail: 54,363 out of 164,107, according to the county’s election dashboard.

A total of about 131,000 Arlington voters cast ballots in the 2020 presidential election.

Kaine, facing challenger Hung Cao (R), said he has attended over 200 campaign events in recent months. Baker likewise said the Arlington County Democratic Committee is doubling down in the homestretch.

“We are knocking on doors,” Baker said. “We’re talking to voters. We’re texting voters, making phone calls to voters. We’re doing everything to … reach our Democratic voters and make sure they show up and vote.”

In local races, Arlington Democrats nominated JD Spain Sr. for Arlington County Board and endorsed Zuraya Tapia-Hadley and Kathleen Clark for School Board.

All three local candidates also showed up today to deliver stump speeches and speak to a handful of early voters at the community center a few blocks south of Columbia Pike.

Between now and Saturday, Nov. 2, Arlington voters can continue casting early ballots at the following locations.

  • Courthouse Plaza at 2100 Clarendon Blvd, Suite 320
  • Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center at 333 Long Bridge Drive
  • Madison Community Center at 3829 N. Stafford Street
  • Walter Reed Community Center at 2909 16th Street S.

Through Friday, the first two sites are open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., while the second two are open from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. All four are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday.
