The Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots have reached the semifinals of the 6D North Region girls field-hockey tournament.
In order for the Arlington rivals to meet in the championship match on Wednesday (Nov. 6), the high-school teams have to win matches set for Monday (Nov. 4) at 7 p.m. Yorktown (14-3) will host the Madison Warhawks (16-3) and W-L (13-6) will play at the defending champion Oakton Cougars (18-2).
The semifinal winners earn berths into the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament. Yorktown is the defending state champion.
Washington-Liberty and Yorktown each won first-round matches of the eight-team region tourney. Yorktown blanked the visiting South Lakes Seahawks, 4-0, and W-L nipped the Westfield Bulldogs, 2-1, in overtime.
For Yorktown in the win, Olivia Stafford scored two goals and Elena Reiser and Quincy Greene had one each. Reiser had two assists and Maddie Nimerala and Anna Menard one each. Goalie Sarah Kinzer made three saves. Stafford took five shots and Reiser and Greene two each. Leah Williams took one.
Yorktown enters the region semifinal having won six straight matches, five by shutouts.
In Washington-Liberty’s win over Westfield, Abigail Bodnar scored the walk-off game-winning goal with 8:06 left in the second overtime. The goal came off of a penalty-corner situation.
Bodnar scored when she tipped in a shot taken from the center of the field by Claudia Volpe.
Washington-Liberty trailed 1-0 in the fourth quarter when it scored off a penalty corner to tie the match at 1. Margaret Erwin and Tess Baj took the shots, with the ball finally pushed into the goal.
Oakton enters the region semifinal having won 10 straight matches.
