W-L lineman chosen defensive Liberty District Player of the Year

The stingy play of the Washington-Liberty Generals defense was a big reason for the football team’s success during the fall season.

A top player and a leader in tackles was senior lineman Ben Hughes. For his regular-season performance, the 6-foot-1, 240-pound Hughes was chosen as a Defensive Player of the Year in the Liberty District, as well as a first-team lineman.

“He’s been making one big play after another for us all season,” Washington-Liberty coach Josh Shapiro told ARLnow.

Hughes helped W-L finish 12-1, win the Liberty District title and finish second in the 6D North Region tournament.

During the 10-game regular season, Hughes made 52 tackles, of which 26 were for losses, including 11 quarterback sacks.

Hughes also forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles, batted down passes and consistently hurried opposing quarterbacks into quick releases.

One of his best games was an 18-tackle, three-sack performance against Herndon. He had 14 tackles against Marshall.

Hughes’ strong defensive play did not stop in the regular season. In three 6D North Region tournament-playoff games, he made 17 tackles, including four sacks, and was responsible for several quarterback hurries.

Hughes contributed on offense as well for Washington-Liberty. He had 108 yards rushing and five touchdown runs, and had one catch for five yards.
