Two W-L football players enjoyed standout seasons on offense

Even though their team lost in the region final, Liberty District offensive football standouts Jon Malatesta and Matthew Abramson amassed big numbers in the game, as the seniors often did for the Washington-Liberty Generals during the 2024 high-school season.

At wide receiver, Malatesta had one last hurrah by catching nine passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in W-L’s 48-21 loss to the Madison Warhawks in the 6D North Region championship game Nov. 30.

At quarterback, Abramson had his busiest game of the fall by completing 31 of 48 passing for 252 yards and he threw three touchdown passes.

His last scoring pass covered 10 yards to Malatesta. His final completion of the game and his high-school career also went to Malatesta.

For their efforts this season, both were chosen first-team all-district. Malatesta also was selected the district’s offensive Player of the Year. He caught 76 passes for 1,001 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Malatesta also had 181 yards in kick returns, and had a handful of yards rushing.

The two players helped Washington-Liberty compile a 12-1 overall record and win the district championship for the second straight season, then finish second in the region.

A couple of Malatesta’s most productive games including having 11 catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns and 10 receptions for 98 yards and four TDs in another. He scored touchdowns in 11 of the 13 games.

Abramson played in all 13 contests. He completed 214 passes for 2,574 yards and 33 touchdowns. He rushed for 253 yards and two scores.

Abramson threw TD passes in 12 of the 13 games. He tossed multiple scoring passes, with highs of four and five, in 11 of the contests.

Abramson’s most single-game completions and attempts were in the region final.
