Five high-school football players, all seniors, and one head coach from Arlington were chosen to 6D North Region first or second teams on defense for their performances during the 2024 fall season.
The first-team all-region selections were lineman Ben Hughes, linebacker Sean Guffey and all-purpose defensive player Ian Crowley from the Washington-Liberty Generals. Those three were leaders in tackles, sacks, deflected passes and other defensive categories for W-L.
Making second team on defense from Washington-Liberty was defensive back Connor Hurren. Owen Woodward of the Yorktown Patriots also was chosen to the second team at defensive back.
Washington-Liberty’s Josh Shapiro was the second-team all-region Coach of the Year.
Shapiro led the Generals to a 12-1 overall record, the Liberty District championship and a second-place finish in the region tournament. The dozen single-season wins were the most in program history, and the 10-0 regular-season mark was the first since the 1956 campaign.
Shapiro has been W-L’s head coach since 2007, the longest tenure in the team’s century-long history. He also was the Liberty District Coach of the Year.
First-team all-region selections will be eligible to be chosen to all-state teams at the Virginia High School League Class 6 level.
