Yorktown Patriots’ wrestler Basheer Hadi was the top finisher from an Arlington school with a runner-up in the heavyweight division at the annual NOVA Classic at Fairfax High School.
Hadi finished with a 3-1 record at the two-day event, concluding Dec. 7, with a first-round bye. His victories were two by pin and the other by technical fall in the semifinals.
Hadi was pinned in the final.
The long-running classic, the season-opener for most teams, included wrestlers from more than 30 squads from throughout Virginia.
Hadi helped Yorktown place 15th with 90.5 points. The Washington-Liberty Generals were 21st and the Wakefield Warriors 28th.
The Westfield Bulldogs won with 227 points.
From Yorktown, Cambyses Khani finished sixth at 120 pounds and Jaden Arce was seventh at 190. Khani had three pins, one in 16 seconds.
Both Hadi and Khani were 6D North Region champions last season. Khani finished fifth at 113 pounds in last season’s Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament.
From Washington-Liberty at the NOVA Classic, Evan Cronin was seventh at 165. Wakefield’s Anthony Morales was eighth at 165.
On Saturday (Dec. 14), Wakefield will host a multi-team dual-match tournament that will include Yorktown. Washington-Liberty will participate in a tourney at Sherando High School in Winchester.
