Holding an early lead then making a bit of a fourth-quarter rally wasn’t enough for the Washington-Liberty Generals as the squad fell to the host Robinson Rams in non-district girls basketball action.
The Generals (1-2) lost the Monday (Dec. 9) high-school game 36-29 to undefeated Robinson (4-0), the defending champions of the 6D North Region and Patriot District tournaments.
Washington-Liberty played without starting junior center Eve Jungman, one of the team’s top scorers and leading rebounders. She was on the bench on crutches with a leg injury.
Washington-Liberty took a quick 6-0 lead, with senior guard Frances Shapiro scoring all of those points. She finished with eight points in the first period as W-L was in front, 10-6, at quarter’s end.
Robinson scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to take a 16-10 lead and was ahead the rest of the way, leading 24-13 at halftime and 29-17 after three periods.
Washington-Liberty then outscored Robinson, 12-7, in the final quarter. The 36 points in a game were the Rams’ fewest yet in a contest this season.
Shapiro finished as the Generals’ leading scorer, with 13 points to go with three assists and three rebounds. Freshman forward Anna Jungman had eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for W-L.
Senior guard Julia Kelly scored five and had two rebounds; senior guard Isabella Menn had two points, three rebounds and two steals; and sophomore guard/forward Kathryn Wagener had six rebounds, a block and one point. Juniors Gabrielle Moglica and Catherine Hogans contributed off the bench.
