Wakefield boys have 1-1 week prior to hosting annual hoop tourney

The Wakefield Warriors (4-2, 1-0) warmed up for their upcoming George Long Holiday Tournament by finishing with a 1-1 record in boys basketball action last week.

Wakefield defeated the Langley Saxons, 59-36, in a Liberty District high-school contest, then lost to the Westfield Bulldogs, 64-42, in non-league play.

Both games were played at Wakefield.

In the win over Langley, Jeremiah Poole and Kooper Odar each scored 16 points. Isiah Ledbetter had a couple of steals and layups, with Antonio Posey and Shane Morrison doing the same. Wakefield had 12 steals. Poole and Keyon Tiggle were among the Wakefield players making three-pointers.

Against Westfield, the game was close until midway through the second quarter, when the Bulldogs took control.

“We played well for a quarter and a half, then the game got away,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said.

Westfield is considered one of the top teams in the 6D North Region this season.

Of Wakefield’s first six games, five were at home. The Warriors’ next three contests also will be at home in the eight-team George Long tourney Dec. 26-28.

Wakefield will play the West Springfield Spartans at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 26) in its opening game of the tournament. Wakefield had defeated West Springfield, 61-41, earlier this season.

The Spartans were a late replacement in the George Long event after Freedom-Woodbridge pulled out. Wakefield was scheduled to play Freedom-Woodbridge in the first round.

Bentley said he didn’t want to rebracket the entire tournament, instead opting to play West Springfield again.
