Two W-L football players chosen to VHSL Class 6 all-state teams

Jon Malatesta and Ian Crowley, top players for the Washington-Liberty Generals 2024 district-champion football squad, were Virginia High School League Class 6 all-state selections.

Each was chosen to the second team, Malatesta as a wide receiver on offense and Crowley as an all-purpose player on defense.

They were the lone players from Arlington schools selected to the all-state teams.

In 13 games for the 12-1 Generals, Malatesta caught 76 passes for 1,001 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 181 yards in kick returns, and additional yardage rushing.

Malatesta also was selected as the second-team all-region Offensive Player of the Year and was the Liberty District’s Offensive Player of the Year.

From his linebacker and defensive-line positions, Crowley made 62 tackles, with 21 of those for losses. He had 12.5 sacks, two interceptions, forced three fumbles and recovered two, broke up seven passes, batted down multiple passes and scored one defensive touchdown.

In the region-tournament semifinal game against Langley, Crowley had five tackles for losses, including a sack.

Crowley was the district’s first-team all-purpose player on defense, and made first time all-region on defense.
