Some high-school basketball teams in Arlington won’t have much time to practice next week. Instead, the varsity squads will be busy playing games.
The Wakefield Warriors girls and boys teams each have four games scheduled from Monday (Jan. 13) to Friday (Jan. 17).
The Washington-Liberty Generals teams each have three games scheduled from Jan. 13 to Jan. 16. Throw in the Yorktown Patriots, as well — those girls and boys squads have three games each on tap from Jan. 14 through Jan. 17.
All of those teams have an extra game on next week’s schedule because of a makeup from a Jan. 8 postponement when Arlington and Fairfax county schools were closed due of snow. When schools are closed, games are not played.
In the case of Wakefield, its teams have a fourth game next week against a non-district opponent on Jan. 17 at Alexandria City High School.
Starting Jan. 13, the Wakefield teams face the Marshall Statesmen (boys home and girls away) each at 7:30 p.m.; play Yorktown Jan. 14 (girls home and boys away) at 7:30; play at Washington-Liberty Jan. 16 (girls at 5:45 and boys at 7:30); and compete at Alexandria City on Jan 17 (girls at 5:45 and boys at 7:30).
The Washington-Liberty boys host McLean at 7:30 Jan. 13, play at Langley Jan. 15 and host Wakefield Jan. 16, with the girls facing McLean and Langley at opposite sites at 7:30.
In addition to facing Wakefield on Jan. 14, the Yorktown teams play Herndon and McLean on Jan. 16 and 17 at different sites.
The schedules are expected to return to normal the following week, depending on the weather and any reschedules, with just two games for all of the teams but one. The Wakefield girls have three contests on tap.
