The Wakefield Warriors and Yorktown Patriots won in boys high-school basketball action Friday night (Jan. 10) to remain undefeated at 2-0 in the Liberty District.
The Wakefield boys got 16 points from Keyon Tiggle and 10 each from Jeremiah Poole and Koopar Odar in their 55-51 home victory over the McLean Highlanders.
Wakefield improved to 7-4 overall, and the win was the Warriors’ second in a row.
Wakefield defeated the host Alexandria City Titans, 71-53, the night before in non-district action behind 18 points from Shane Morrison, 17 from Odar and 10 from Gabe Henneman.
Wakefield entered those consecutive contests after losing its final two games of its own George Long Holiday tournament.
Next up for Wakefield is another district game on Monday, Jan. 13, at home against the Marshall Statesmen (8-4, 2-1) at 7:30 p.m. That is a makeup game from last week’s contest, which was postponed because of weather.
Wakefield defeated Marshall in last season’s district-tournament championship game. Marshall won that same title the season before.
“Marshall is always very tough — they run their offense so well, and we expect the same again,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley told ARLnow.
The Yorktown boys downed the host Langley Saxons, 65-60, Jan. 10 to improve to 10-1 overall. Jake Coulam and James Davis each scored 15 points for Yorktown.
The Patriots trailed 37-34 in the third quarter, then put together a 13-0 run and were ahead the rest of the way. Yorktown took the lead for good at 39-37 with 4:22 left in the game on a three-pointer from the left wing by Coulam.
Yorktown’s lead in the final quarter became as many as 10 points.
Yorktown is scheduled to host Wakefield on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m., in what could be a showdown for first place.
The Washington-Liberty boys (4-9, 1-1) lost to Marshall, 49-29, in Jan. 10 action. Washington-Liberty hosts McLean at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13.
