Led by standout wrestler Cameron Millsapps, the Wakefield Warriors enjoyed a strong performance at the La Luchadora Classic girls high-school competition.
Millsapps won the individual championship at 152 pounds at the 28-team event. She dominated the weight class with a 4-0 record and four pins.
Millsapps pinned her opponent in the finals in 2:23. Millsapps’ other pins came in 42 and 45 seconds and 1:16.
The senior was one of the top wrestlers in the state last season for the Warriors.
Also reaching the finals at the La Luchadora Classic for Wakefield was Fabiola Matas at 185 pounds. She battled her way to the championship with two pins in 2:15 and 3:16, finishing the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Matas was pinned in the final.
Wakefield’s Aniya Corbin (114) compiled a 4-1 record, pinning her opponent in just 49 seconds in the consolation match to finish third. She had three other pins in 2:00, 2:21 and 2:31.
Ashley Alvarez (100) had a 3-2 record with two pins in 1:42 and 4:05. Her other victory was by technical fall.
Vera Fitzke (120) had a pin in 1:15 and finished 1-2. Other top wrestlers for Wakefield were Fatima Granados (132), Alyssa Perez (165) and Marlin Ramirez Castillo (185).
Wakefield has as many female wrestlers as any team in the 6D North Region, and regularly competes in various competitions.
“Wakefield girls wrestling continues to thrive, with athletes demonstrating skill, grit and sportsmanship,” Wakefield coach John Leinberger told ARLnow.
