W-L girls basketball team has now won two straight over Yorktown

The Washington-Liberty Generals drew a little closer with a recent win, but still trail in victories this decade against their top rival Yorktown Patriots in girls varsity basketball action.

Washington-Liberty defeated host Yorktown, 46-33, in that Liberty District high-school meeting. The Generals led 23-17 at halftime, then pulled away a bit more in the second half.

In 11 games in the six seasons between the rivals this decade, Yorktown has won seven times and W-L four, but now two in a row. Two of the 11 contests have finished in overtime.

The teams will meet again Thursday, Feb. 13 at Washington-Liberty.

The Generals and Patriots have met twice each season in two regular-season games each year since the 2019-20 campaign, and have not yet tipped off during the Liberty District playoffs.

In the 46-33 win, Frances Shapiro was the leading scorer for Washington-Liberty. Other top scorers were Anna Youngman, Eva Youngman, Gabrielle Moglica, Kathryn Wagener and Julia Kelly.

Anna Youngman’s driving layup gave Washington-Liberty the lead for good at 19-17 in the second period. That basket began an 11-0 W-L run that upped its lead to 28-17 in the third period.

Ainsley Lomas, Helene Lydon, Molly Cooper and Samantha Donahue were top scorers for Yorktown.

In its previous game, host Yorktown nipped the McLean Highlanders, 42-41, in district play. Eleanor Mahshie made the game-winning foul shot with 21 seconds to play.

McLean got the ball and had four shots to win. Two missed and two were blocked, one each by Lydon and Samantha Donahue.
