Wakefield girls wrestling team enjoys another strong showing

The Wakefield High School girls wrestling team showcased its talent at the recent Orange County Open tournament.

The competition was hosted by Orange County High School in Orange, Va., and included more than 300 wrestlers. Wakefield entered six wrestlers and finished 15th in the team scoring. There were 54 teams entered.

Leading Wakefield was individual champion Cameron Millsapps at the 152-pound weight class. She finished 4-0 with four pins, including winning by a fall in 1:01 in the finals over Addison Smith of Orange County, who previously had been ranked No. 1 in the state.

Millsapps also had a 21-second first-round pin.

Wakefield’s Ashley Alvarez (100 pounds) finished with two wins. Fatima Granados (132) had a pin in the second round, scoring six team points.

Fabiola Matas (185) placed sixth, securing a lightning-fast pin in just 37 seconds during the consolation round.

Marlin Ramirez Castillo (185) and Alyssa Perez (165) were Wakefield’s other entries.

“Wrestling is an individual sport, but the way they lifted each other up made all the difference,” Wakefield girls coach Maria Morales told ARLnow.

Assistant coach Ray Ways-Ayala emphasized the team’s resilience, saying, “This tournament was a test of grit and determination. Watching these young women overcome challenges and fight through tough matches shows just how strong they are, both mentally and physically.”

Yorktown High School had two wrestlers entered in the Orange County event, with Charlotte Bowman finishing second at 145. She had a 3-1 record with a pin and a technical fall.

Bowman lost in the finals by a 1-0 score.
