O’Connell swim & dive teams each place third in conference meets

The Bishop O’Connell Knights certainly have been consistent with their finishes in postseason swimming and diving meets this winter.

Most recently, the high school girls and boys teams each placed third in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships in Laurel, Md.

Both won Northern Virginia Catholic meet titles a week early, and days before that placed fifth (girls) and seventh (boys) at the National Catholic meet.

At the WCAC meet, O’Connell’s only individual winners were two divers. Rai Detten won the boys event with a score of 212.8 and Lili Lepore was first in the girls with 165.75.

Also in girls diving for O’Connell, Leah Close was second and Catherine Ayers third. In boys diving, Kellen Colevas was fourth.

The top-finishing swimmers for O’Connell were Stella Mastroianni with seconds in the backstroke and butterfly and Kalyn O’Hara with thirds in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley in the girls meet.

Also in the girls meet for the Knights, Anna Sullivan was second in the breaststroke and fourth in the 200 free, Elliott Rowan was third in the back and fifth in the fly, Eleanor Wertzler was fifth in the 50 and 100 free races, Caeli McIntosh was ninth in a race, Carlin Smittle was 10th in two races and Reagan Cervenak 10th in another.

The O’Connell girls medley relay was second and the 400 free relay third.

Leading the O’Connell boys was Paul Mullen with a third in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 free. Graham Rowan was third in the back and seventh in the 50 free, Timmy Adye was fifth in the 50 and 100 free races, Jermaine Worthen was ninth in the IM and 10th in the breast, Wills Fleming was 10th in the IM and Colin Buckhorn 10th in the fly.

The boys 400 free relay placed third, the medley fourth and the 200 free fifth.
