Six new members inducted into Washington-Liberty Hall of Fame

The six new members of Washington-Liberty High School Athletic Hall of Fame were recognized and inducted at a Jan. 24 ceremony at the school.

The event occurred during halftime of the boys home varsity basketball game between W-L and the Langley Saxons.

The new inductees are Catherine (Proctor) Coffman (Class of 1981, crew), Melba Griffin Martin (Class of 1966, water polo), Maycol Nunez (Class of 2016, boys soccer), Dan Pototsky (Class of 1977, baseball), Julio Rivas (Class of 1998, baseball) and Manny Rivas (Class of 1995, baseball).

There are now more than 60 members of the Washington-Liberty Athletic Hall of Fame.

Nunez helped the Washington-Liberty (then Washington-Lee) boys soccer team win a region championship and a Virginia High School League state title in 2016. With 86 goals and 25 assists, Nunez is the team’s all-time scoring leader.

After playing baseball in college at the University of Kentucky where he was a two-time all-conference selection, Pototsky later returned as W-L’s head baseball coach for a number of years. As a player, he helped the Generals win a region championship and was chosen all-state.

He also has coached various youth teams, including taking Arlington Senior Babe Ruth squads to World Series appearances.

The Hall of Fame induction was the second for Pototsky in recent months. He was inducted into the Arlington Athletic Hall of Fame in October.

In addition to her success with crew, Coffman also was a swimmer and member of the track-and-field team, as well as the cheerleading team.
