JUST IN: Road near hospital blocked after driver smashes into wall, utility pole

A road near Virginia Hospital Center was blocked Tuesday afternoon following an unusual crash.

The crash happened around noon on 16th Street N. near N. Abingdon Street, in the Waycroft-Woodlawn neighborhood.

A minivan driving westbound struck several parked cars before hopping the curb and smashing into a home’s retaining wall and fence, as well as a utility pole, according to a preliminary incident summary.

The street is a busy route to the hospital, though the speed limit is 25 mph and there are multiple speed bumps between the hospital and N. Glebe Road.

First responders pulled the driver out of the vehicle and transported him to the hospital, preliminary reports suggest. He is currently in stable condition, an Arlington County police spokesperson tells ARLnow, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

As of 2 p.m., 16th Street N. remained blocked between Glebe and N. Buchanan Street.

Police and electrical crews were still on the scene, which is also near Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and a few blocks away from Ballston.

Authorities are advising drivers to seek an alternate route.
