There was at least one individual champion from three of the Arlington high-school teams at district and conference wrestling tournaments.
The Yorktown Patriots had the most winners, with two. The Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals had one each, with the highest finish from a Bishop O’Connell Knights grappler being second.
Yorktown’s champions in the Liberty District tournament at Langley High School were seniors Cambyses Khani at the 120-pound weight class and Basheer Hadi at 285 (heavyweight).
Khani was 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall in his matches, dominating the competition. Hadi received a first-round bye and finished 2-0 with a pin.
Wakefield and Washington-Liberty each had one champion:
- For W-L, junior Evan Cronin won at 157 with a 2-0 record to help the Generals finish third in the team scoring. Cronin won his first match by a major decision, then won 11-10 in the final.
- Wakefield’s champion was sophomore Anthony Morales at 175. He was 2-0 with a pin and won in the finals, 11-6.
Yorktown had two wrestlers finish second in Saeed AlMazrouei at 106 and Chris Cobey at 150.
Third for Yorktown were Neil Allenman (165) and Logan Futrell (138) was fourth. Yorktown was fourth in the team scoring.
For Washington-Liberty, second were Josue Hernandez (113), Bilegjargal Miyaragchaa (175) and Brayden Black (190).
Third for the Generals were Zach Capps (132) and Tuvshintur Battulga (150). Fourth were Aadil Bhalla (120), David Portillo (126), De’Quan Taylor (144), Liam Sloan (165) and Zablon Mulugeta (285).
Third for Wakefield were Chris Majano (138), Abubakr Abdelmutalb (157) and Jaden Delgado (215). Wakefield was seventh in team scoring.
For O’Connell, Peyton Friedman finished second at the lightest (106) weight at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championships. He had a 2-1 record, losing 7-0 in the title match.
Third in the WCAC for O’Connell were Brennen Sweet (157), Sam Casolini Dal (215) and Rowan Klanderman (285).
Fourth were Andrew Swingle (120), Jacob Geister (132) and Peter Bilaniuk (150). O’Connell was sixth in team scoring.
NOTE: Washington-Liberty’s Ulysses Smith was chosen as the Liberty District’s Coach of the Year this winter, joining Wakefield head coach John Leinberger receiving that honor in 2023 and Yorktown’s Andrew Adams in 2021.
