With road victories over two Arlington rivals this past week, the Yorktown Patriots finished the regular-season boys basketball campaign with a 19-3 overall record.
Yorktown finished first with an 11-1 record in the Liberty District and will be the top seed in the upcoming postseason tournament, a first since the Patriots joined that high-school league in the 2015-16 season.
Yorktown last won the Liberty tournament during the 2019-20 campaign.
In those two most recent wins, Yorktown first defeated the host Wakefield Warriors, 65-43, then downed the Washington-Liberty Generals, 61-48. Yorktown finished 4-0 against those Arlington finals in regular-season action this season.
The Patriots enter the postseason with four straight wins, all against district opponents.
Yorktown’s three regular-season losses, spread weeks apart, were against teams with a combined 53-17 record through recent play — Marshall was 16-7, South Lakes, 19-2 and C.G. Woodson 18-3.
South Lakes is atop the Concorde District standings and Woodson is on top in the Patriot.
The Wakefield and Washington-Liberty boys teams finished the regular season with records of 11-11 (6-6 in the district) and 6-17 (3-9), respectively. Wakefield is the No. 3 seed in the district tourney, W-L the seventh seed.
In Yorktown’s win over Washington-Liberty, Brennan Pilot made five three-pointers and scored 20 points to go with three rebounds.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Pilot to close the first half gave Yorktown the lead for good at 26-20.
Jack Coulam had nine points and five assists for Yorktown, Jack Rubin scored seven and had as many rebounds, Austin Barbieri had seven points and six boards, Charlie Ganbaatar made two threes, and James Davis had three points and six rebounds. Yorktown made 11 three-pointers.
For W-L, Jyot Sahni made four threes and scored 12; Jack Cameron had 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal; Emmett Engelhardt scored seven with three rebounds; Gabe Smith scored six; and Luke Jones had three points, three rebounds and one steal.
Wakefield defeated the visiting Herndon Hornets, 49-44, in its final regular-season game. Jeremiah Poole scored 15 points and Gabe Henneman 11 for Wakefield.
W-L Girls Wrap Up Regular Season with Win Over Yorktown: The Washington-Liberty Generals (15-7, 9-3) concluded their basketball regular season with a 68-32 home victory over the Yorktown Patriots in an all-Arlington Liberty District girls game.
With the win, its fifth in a row, W-L will be the No. 2 seed in the district tournament. The team finished 4-0 against its two Arlington rivals this season.
Against Yorktown, Washington-Liberty took control early, leading 23-2 at the end of the first quarter and 44-12 at halftime.
In that first period, Julia Kelly made a three-pointer and scored eight points for the Generals, Anna Jungman scored six, Francis Shapiro four, Eve Jungman made a three and Kathryn Wagener scored two.
In a previous game, Yorktown celebrated its senior night by defeating the visiting Wakefield Warriors, 66-44, in an all-Arlington clash.
Yorktown seniors Helene Lydon, Victoria Carcillo, Maddie Matthews and Julia Boller were honored before tip-off. Yorktown also recognized Wakefield seniors Rylen Seeley, Lailah Abdul Khaaliq, Zee Briscoe, Sofia Moreno, Sabrin Anderson and Siena Nesmith.
After a close, low-scoring opening quarter, the Patriots built a 15-point lead in the second quarter, but Wakefield rallied to trail by just six (28-22) at halftime. Yorktown then re-established a double-digit lead by scoring the first seven points of the second half, pulling away.
Lydon led the Patriots with 20 points and Ainsley Lomas scored 14. Eleanor Mahshie dished 10 assists and had seven points. Sam Donahue added seven points and led Yorktown with five rebounds.
Leading scorers for Wakefield were Sam Belvo, Lilah Denton, Millie Marston and Lucy Strawn with eight points each. Seeley added seven.
