As expected, seniors Cambyses Khani and Basheer Hadi repeated as region wrestling champions this season for the Yorktown Patriots.
Khani won the 6D North Region tournament title at 120 pounds and Hadi was the heavyweight winner at the 285 weight class. Each had 3-0 records in the high-school competition, hosted by Centreville High School.
Khani dominated with two pins, then winning in the title match by a major decision. Hadi had a pin, a technical fall and he won 4-2 in the final.
For the season, Khani has compiled a 33-5 record, and won his 100th career match during the 2024-25 campaign. Hadi stands 39-4.
Prior to the region, each won Liberty District titles this winter at the same weight classes. The district crown was the fourth for Khani, the most ever by any Yorktown wrestler. Hadi has won two district titles.
The grapplers will end their seasons at the Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament, trying to win a state championship for the first time. This will be the fourth straight appearance in the state for Khani, who finished fifth the last two seasons.
“The two of them worked incredibly hard during the season and in the offseason to jump levels in the sport of wrestling,” Yorktown coach Andrew Adams told ARLnow.
Also for Yorktown at the region tournament, Logan Futrell (23-18) finished fourth at 138, Neil Alleman (33-14) also was fourth at 165 and Chris Cobey (17-11) fifth at 150.
In the team scoring, Yorktown finished sixth despite having just seven wrestlers competing. Teams can field competitors in each of 14 weight classes.
“In every match the team was fighting and finding ways to win when the odds were stacked against them,” Adams said. “The team has one main goal in mind, and that is to peak at the right time and find ways to win in big moments.”
The Washington-Liberty Generals finished seventh in the region. The team’s top finishers were Josue Hernandez (113), Evan Cronin (157) and Bilegjargal Miyaragchaa (175), all in third.
All three had 3-1 records, Miyaragchaa with two pins and a major decision. Hernandez had a pin and a technical fall and Cronin had a pin.
Fifth were Dylan Walsh (120) and Zachary Capps (132). Sixth were Liam Sloan (165) and Brayden Black (190).
The Wakefield Warriors placed 11th in the region, led by a third from Chris Majano at 138 and fourths by Anthony Morales (175) and Jaden Delgado (215). Abubakr Abdelmutalb was fifth at 157. Majano battled back from an early loss to win three straight matches to finish third.
Delgado had a big first-period pin in the consolation semifinals, while Morales dominated his opponent in just 1:10 to guarantee a top-four finish.
Majano, Morales and Delgado move on to the state tournament.
Abdelmutalb’s final match showcased his resilience, according to Wakefield coach John Leinberger, as he ended his tournament with a 9-2 victory.
