Hoop roundup: W-L girls finish second in district tournament

The Washington-Liberty Generals girls team advanced the farthest of any Arlington high-school basketball team in Liberty District tournaments.

The second-seeded girls squad (17-8) lost to the top seed and host Langley Saxons, 56-45, in the Friday (Feb. 21) championship contest, having its six-game winning streak snapped.

The Generals ended the season 0-3 against Langley.

Washington-Liberty finished 2-1 in the tourney, routing the Herndon Hornets, 76-32, in the first round, then rallying past the No. 3 seed McLean Highlanders, 46-37, in the semifinals. Each of those games was at W-L.

In the championship game, Washington-Liberty trailed 12-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Generals then gradually rallied and took their only lead at 33-32 with three seconds left in the third quarter on a layup by Anna Jungman.

Langley responded with a 16-2 run to build a 13-point lead, and was comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

Jungman had 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists for W-L. Frances Shapiro scored 12 and had six rebounds and two assists. Eve Jungman scored eight; Kathryn Wagener had five points, five rebounds and two assists; Julia Kelly scored three; and Isabella Menn netted two.

Against McLean, Washington-Liberty put together a 15-1 second-half run to rally from a 27-23 deficit. Eve Youngman’s layup at the end of the third period gave the Generals the lead for good at 29-28.

Wagener led the Generals with 14 points. Eve Jungman scored 22 in the win over Herndon.

In other Liberty tournament girls action, the No. 4 seed Yorktown Patriots finished 1-1 and the No. 6 seed Wakefield Warriors went 0-1.

Yorktown defeated the Marshall Statesmen, 50-39, then lost to the top seed Langley Saxons, 50-19. Wakefield lost in the first round to McLean, 64-20.

Wakefield Boys Go 1-1 in Tournament: The No. 3 seed Wakefield Warriors finished 1-1 in the Liberty District boys tournament.

Wakefield (12-12) nipped the visiting Herndon Hornets, 53-52, in the first round, then lost to the No. 2 seed and host Marshall Statesmen, 64-61, in a seesaw semifinal game that had 15 lead changes and six ties.

Wakefield had defeated Marshall in two close and much lower scoring regular-season contests.

In the win over Herndon, Kooper Odar made two foul shots to give Wakefield the 53-52 lead with three seconds to play. Herndon then missed a rushed shot under its basket as the game ended.

Odar led Wakefield with 18 points.

Odar scored 15 and had five rebounds against Marshall. Shane Morrison scored 13 for Wakefield, Dyson Beaty nine, Isiah Ledbetter eight and Jeremiah Poole, Gabe Henneman and Keyon Tiggle (two three-pointers) six each.

Wakefield led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter, trailed 33-32 at halftime and 49-46 after three. The Warriors’ last lead was 53-51 with 6:19 to play in the fourth after Morrison’s driving five-footer in the lane.

Marshall made consecutive three-pointers to take the lead for good at 57-53.

Yorktown Boys Upset by McLean: In boys Liberty District tournament play, the top seed Yorktown Patriots (19-4) finished 0-1. They received a first-round bye, then were upset at home in the semifinals by the No. 5 seed McLean Highlanders, 47-38.

The 38 points were a single-game season low for Yorktown, which nipped McLean, 45-44, the last time the teams met in a regular-season contest.

In the semifinal, Yorktown had a 16-7 second-quarter lead. The score was tied at 16 at halftime, then McLean was ahead 28-20 after three quarters and 33-23 in the fourth.

Yorktown rallied to within 33-29, but got no closer.

Washington-Liberty Boys Fall in First Round: The No. 7 seed Washington-Liberty Generals (6-18) boys lost to Marshall, 49-34, in the first round.
