Arlington basketball teams eliminated in region tournaments

The Yorktown Patriots got off to a fast start in the 6D North Region boys basketball tournament with a dominating 73-43 first-round rout of the visiting Oakton Cougars.

In its next game, though, Yorktown lost to the host and Concorde District tournament champion Westfield Bulldogs, 64-55, in the semifinals — ending the Patriots’ season with a 20-5 record.

Against Oakton, the Patriots won the opening tip and took a 2-0 lead on a basket by Austin Barbieri. After falling behind, 3-2, a short jumper by Jake Coulam gave Yorktown the lead back and for good at 4-3.

The Patriots then led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter, 43-19 at halftime and 65-33 after three periods.

The 73 points were a single-game season high for Yorktown, coming after scoring a season low in a 47-38 semifinal loss to the McLean Highlanders in the district tourney, which followed a first-round bye.

Against Westfield, the game was close early and late.

The score was tied at 9 at the end of the first quarter. Westfield led 28-16 at halftime and 44-31 after three periods.

Yorktown rallied to within five in the fourth quarter behind a smothering full-court press, forcing seven Westfield turnovers in the final stanza, and making five three-pointers.

The Bulldogs remained ahead by making 10 of 10 foul shots in the final quarter and hitting all five of their field-goal attempts.

Early in the regular season, Yorktown defeated Westfield, 64-61, leading 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the region semifinal, four players scored in double figures for Yorktown, with Coulam leading the way with 13 points. Nick Senkus scored 12 and Jake Rubin and Brennan Pilot (six rebounds) 11 each.

The Patriots made 11 three-pointers. James Davis scored four with two blocks and Barbieri had three points and four rebounds.

Other Action: In other first-round region-tournament games, the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots in girls action and the Wakefield Warriors in boys all lost their only contests.

The host W-L girls (17-9) fell to the Chantilly Chargers, 48-40, in seesaw game. The Generals went 2-2 in postseason play, finishing second in the Liberty District tournament with a 2-1 record.

The Yorkown girls (10-16) lost to the host Oakton Cougars, 49-43, after leading for much of the game.

The Wakefield boys (12-13) fell behind early in a 63-30 road loss to the Concorde District tournament champion Westfield Bulldogs in first-round region action.

The losses ended the seasons for each Arlington team.
