Wakefield, other crew teams begin preparing for spring competition

High-school crew teams from Arlington began practice in recent days for the upcoming spring season, which starts in April with area regattas.

As shown in the photo with this coverage, a couple of Wakefield High School girls eight shells practice in the early morning on the Anacostia River. The Wakefield boys and girls teams alternate morning practices on the Anacostia.

Last spring, the Wakefield girls varsity eight won a state rowing championship for the fourth straight year. In addition, the Wakefield second varsity eight won a state title, along with a couple of other Wakefield shells.

After a number of scrimmage events in late March and early April, the season begins for good for Wakefield and other Arlington schools with the Ryz Obuchowicz Regatta on the Occoquan River on Saturday, April 19.

The season ends in May with the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia May 16-17 and the national championships May 23-24 on the Cooper River in Pennsauken Township, N.J.

Like Wakefield, Bishop O’Connell, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown high schools also have large crew programs that participate in many of the same regattas during the spring.
