Yorktown High School junior Anya Clemmer was the lone gymnast from Arlington to participate in the recent Virginia High School League Class 6 state competition.
The junior team captain competed in three individual events, finishing among the top 30 in each at Lake Braddock Secondary School.
Clemmer’s highest finish was a tie for 25th on the uneven bars with an 8.825 score. She tied for 26th on the vault with a 9.2 and tied for 28th on the balance beam at 8.925.
The scoring from judges tends to be more difficult at the state meet, so Clemmer’s scores were a bit lower than at previous district and region competitions.
“While I am satisfied with my performance, I am using this [state meet] experience and feedback from judges to grow as a gymnast,” Clemmer told ARLnow.
Clemmer finished second in the all-around competition at the Liberty District meet, then was third in the all-around at the 6D North Region championships.
At the region, she placed third on the beam and vault and fourth on the bars to qualify for the state.
In addition to being on the Yorktown team, Clemmer also competes year-round for the Arlington Aerials gymnastics squad. She has a state competition coming up soon with the Aerials.
Wakefield High School gymnasts Madeleine Wearing also qualified for the VHSL state meet. She did not participate because she was competing in a conflicting state competition with her club team.
Wearing won the Liberty District all-around title, winning the beam, floor exercise and vault.
