Former O’Connell teammates face off in college-tourney semifinals

Two former high-school teammates for the Bishop O’Connell Knights squared off on the basketball court during a recent men’s college game.

In the semifinals of the Coastal Athletic Association tournament, Christian May was a starting junior guard/forward for the Towson Tigers and junior guard Cavan Reilly started for the Delaware Blue Hens, which won 82-72.

May scored 12 points, had four rebounds, one steal and made two three-pointers in the semifinal. Reilly scored 11, had three steals and also made two three-pointers.

The former Knights took turns on occasion guarding each other.

Both were all-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference players for O’Connell, helping the Knights win 18 games during their senior seasons.

“They are both great kids and good players. We loved having them at O’Connell,” O’Connell head boys basketball coach Joe Wootten told ARLnow.

Wootten attended the semifinal and said he was rooting for both in the game.

The two also faced off this season during two regular-season games, each won by Towson.

For the season, May averaged 7.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He had 26 assists, 14 steals, blocked nine shots and made 35 three-pointers.

May’s game high for points was 21 against Campbell University, when he made five three-pointers. He has scored 714 career points.

Reilly averaged 12.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest in 33 games this season. He had 53 assists, a team-high 43 steals, six blocks and 62 three-pointers.

His single-game season high for points were 24, also against Campbell, making five three-pointers. Reilly has scored 861 career points.
