Two young O’Connell runners place in final indoor track meet

Two young runners from the Bishop O’Connell High School boys indoor track-and-field team placed high in the mile at a late-season meet.

Jayse Brefczynski had one of his most successful races of the indoor season when the sophomore won the mile in 4:34.24, with his freshman teammate Peter Fleenor in sixth in 4:43.43.

The meet was the Road Runners Invitational inside the George Mason University Field House.

Brefczynski won by a little more than a second. Also in the mile for O’Connell, junior Lance Jayme was 11th in 4:54.08.

In other boys races at the meet for O’Connell, sophomore Johnny O’Donnell was third in the 400 (53.75) and freshman Ryan Street was 16th in the 800 (2:13.11). O’Connell’s junior Patrick Porter (2:23.81) and freshman Ben Petersen (2:24.47) finished 26th and 27th in the 800.

In the girls meet, O’Connell’s sophomore Isabelle Rodriguez finished 11th in the 400 (1:03.21) and freshman Camila Soruco (1:06.64) was 21st.

The majority of those O’Connell runners are now participating during the spring’s outdoor track-and-field season.

The team’s opening outdoor meet is scheduled for Monday, March 24 at 3 p.m. at home.

The annual springtime four-team Arlington County high-school meet is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8 at 4 p.m. at Washington-Liberty High School.
