Arlington speed camera relocates to near Swanson Middle School

The speed camera on Lorcom Lane has relocated to another school zone.

The camera installed in January on the 4100 block of Lorcom Lane, near Dorothy Hamm Middle School, has moved to the northbound 1100 block of Patrick Henry Drive near Swanson Middle School in Westover Village.

A 30-day warning period for speed violations will begin on Monday, March 24, the Arlington County Police Department announced in a press release yesterday (Monday).

“The WB 4100 block of Lorcom Lane was determined not to be a viable location due to the curvature of the road which did not allow the radar of the speed camera to get an accurate reading of vehicle speeds,” ACPD spokesperson Ashley Savage told ARLnow.

ACPD installed 10 cameras in school zones this summer, and another eight began tracking violations after winter break.

The cameras are operational when school zone lights are flashing before and after school, and violators receive $100 tickets in the mail.

As of January, the cameras had led to fines for over 7,000 drivers, providing Arlington County with $713,525, according to a Virginia State Police report.

Since the start of the program, reported speeds of vehicles passing the cameras have dropped slightly. The largest change has been in front of Randolph Middle School, where average speeds decreased by about three mph from 24.45 mph to 21.53 mph.
