The head coaches of many high-school sports teams in Arlington have been in place for years. That is not the case, however, for the spring season in baseball and softball.
With the exception of two people, there have been a number of coaching changes in those positions recently.
Of the four head baseball coaches, only Kevin Healy of the Washington-Liberty Generals has been around a while. He begins his seventh season at the helm. Healy also is W-L’s assistant director of student activities.
Adam Balutis of the Wakefield Warriors has the next most seniority as a baseball coach in the county, but also is relatively new — he begins his second season in charge.
At Yorktown High, Nick Meyers begins his first full season as the head coach. He took over as the interim coach midway through the 2024 campaign.
The Bishop O’Connell Knights have the newest head coach in Chris Berset. He was hired in the offseason to lead the private-school squad.
The head high-school coaching positions are the first for Berset, Balutis and Meyers.
Despite the fresh looks on top, all four baseball teams are expected to have winning seasons this spring. O’Connell already has won its first few games.
In softball, Yorktown’s Heather Sutphin has been the Patriots’ head coach for some 15 seasons.
Also in softball, Washington-Liberty’s David Morrison has the next most seniority, beginning only his second season. At Wakefield, Taylor White is the first-year head softball coach, and the same with Tony Uccellini at perennial power O’Connell, already with three victories when the week began.
The head high-school coaching positions are the first for Morrison, White and Uccellini.
