By recently winning its 10th game this spring, the Marymount University Saints baseball team has achieved double-digit victories for 11 straight seasons.
The only year the Division III squad did not reach at least 10 wins was in the program’s inaugural campaign in 2014, when the Saints finished 8-26.
Marymount’s 10th win this season was an 11-0 shutout against Husson University in Davenport, Fla. Jay Wandell and Graham Jones combined for the four-hit shutout, teaming to strike out eight.
The Saints had 14 hits. Having two each were Quincy Via, Bobby Leitzel, Anthony Farmakides, Ryan Wright and Andrew Schreb. Joran Dickson added a hit and two RBI.
Marymount is expected to be a contender again this season in the Middle Atlantic East Conference, with play in that league starting soon.
A milestone fourth-year Marymount coach Mike Cassidy has a chance to reach this season is 100 wins as a college coach. He had 92 through March 22 action.
If he reaches a century’s worth of victories, Cassidy will be the second coach to do so in program history. Frank Leoni started the Marymount program and won 134 games in eight seasons.
Leoni is now in his fourth year as the head coach at Division I Mount St. Mary’s University.
Cassidy has been a part of the Marymount staff since its opening season in 2014. He led the Saints to a single-season best 31 victories last year, when Marymount was ranked nationally (as high as 22nd) for the first time.
Marymount was the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament last spring, but did not win the event.
The lone player from an Arlington high school on Marymount’s roster this spring is Yorktown High graduate Ketz Murray, a sophomore right-handed pitcher. Murray also was an American Legion summer standout for Arlington Post 139.
Through recent action, Murray had an 0-1 record and a 2.40 earned run average in 15 innings, with 15 strikeouts. He threw a six-inning complete game in Marymount’s one-run loss to Washington and Jefferson College.
NOTES: With the 10 victories this season, Marymount’s all-time program overall record was 226-192 through March 22 action … The Saints play their home games at Capital One Park in Tysons.
