W-L senior chosen team’s MVP in Suburban Classic hoop tourney

A standout girls high-school basketball career ended with a final strong performance for Frances Shapiro.

The Washington-Liberty Generals’ senior guard was chosen the Most Valuable Player for the winning 6D North Region squad in one of the two annual season-ending Suburban Classic all-star games played recently at Oakton High School.

She helped the North Region team win 55-39 over a group of all-stars from Loudoun County teams.

Shapiro was one of the squad’s top scorers in the game with 12 points. She made 6 of 7 free throws.

During this past winter season for Washington-Liberty, Shapiro was a a team captain, a top scorer and three-point shooter, helping the Generals finish with a 17-9 record, second in the Liberty District standings (9-3) and runner-up in the district tournament.

Shapiro scored 12 points, had six rebounds, two assists and a steal in the district-championship game against Langley.

The four-year varsity player finished her high-school career with more than 600 points.

“She was a steady player for us for all of those years,” Washington-Liberty coach Maddy DeCou told ARLnow.

The 17 victories were Washington-Liberty’s most in a season in many years. Shapiro also helped W-L finish 4-0 against its two Arlington rivals Wakefield and Yorktown.

For her season-long performance, Shapiro was chosen first-team all-district and second-team all-region. She also made the all-district defensive team.

This spring, Shapiro is a starting soccer player for the Washington-Liberty girls varsity team. She plans to attend Denison University.

NOTE: Washington-Liberty senior guard Julia Kelly also was invited to play in the Suburban Classic, by had a conflict and could not participate … Washington-Liberty’s Malek Ben Hammouda participated in last season’s Suburban Classic, scoring four points with six rebounds.
