With a couple of solid victories, the young Wakefield Warriors won their first two games of the high-school softball season.
Wakefield defeated the Edison Eagles, 6-2, then routed the Marshall Statesmen, 11-1, in home contests.
Wakefield’s roster includes three freshmen and four sophomores. Only three seniors are on the team.
Freshman pitcher Regan Hughes was a big contributor. She pitched a five-inning complete game against Marshall in the slaughter-rule contest, allowing five hits, one earned run and walking just one, with one strikeout.
With the bat, Hughes had three of Wakefield’s 12 hits and one RBI. She doubled twice.
Against Edison, Hughes also had three hits. She pitched four innings, striking out nine and not walking any.
Tatum Oliver is another freshman contributor. She had two hits and three RBI against Marshall and an RBI hit against Edison. Freshman Lucy Strawn had a hit in each game. Sophomore Kira Zoeller had a hit and RBI in the Marshall win.
Also against Marshall, junior Hannah Nilame had two hits and two RBI, junior Reece Wilder also had two hits, junior Olive Jeng had a hit and an RBI and senior Elena Rochard had an RBI. Wakefield did not make an error in that win.
Wakefield amassed 10 hits against Edison.
Sophomore Julia Mitzen had two hits, a double and a solo home run, to go with two RBI. Nilame also had two hits and as many RBI.
Jeng started and worked three innings, fanning three, walking one and allowing three hits.
The victory over Marshall was a win in the Liberty District. The Warriors also defeated Marshall twice last season.
W-L opens with two victories: The Washington-Liberty Generals also won their first two softball games this spring, defeating the Edison Eagles, 16-9, and West Potomac Wolverines, 13-7, in non-district play.
In those victories, Paula Lopez-Landeo, Lily Nix, Cara Bolejack, Celia Anbinder and Alex Wilson each had multiple-hit performances.
Sophomore pitcher Zoe Schroeder threw two complete games, with a combined 16 strikeouts.
The Generals lost their third game to the McLean Highlanders, 8-2, in Liberty District action, getting just three hits. Anbinder doubled and had two RBI.
