Fall schedules are set for Arlington’s varsity football squads

The start of high-school football season is still a good five full months away, but the official schedules have been released for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

All four Arlington County varsity teams open play on Thursday night, Aug. 28, with two of those squads meeting in their openers.

In that all-Arlington contest, the public-school Washington-Liberty Generals will host the private-school Bishop O’Connell Knights. Those teams last met in 1983, also at W-L, with O’Connell winning 21-0.

The teams played during a preseason scrimmage last fall, and head coaches Todd Sabatino of O’Connell and Josh Shapiro of Washington-Liberty agreed to have the teams meet in a 2025 regular-season contest.

“It should be a good game for Arlington,” Shapiro told ARLnow.

Added Sabatino: “It will be a difficult game, because W-L had a strong season in the fall.”

In other 7 p.m. Aug. 28 games, Arlington’s Wakefield Warriors open on the road against the Falls Church Jaguars and the county’s Yorktown Patriots host the South Lakes Seahawks.

In the other all-Arlington Liberty District contests this coming season, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown meet at W-L on Saturday, Nov. 1; Wakefield and Yorktown play at Yorktown on Friday, Oct. 17; and W-L and Wakefield clash on Friday, Oct. 3.

All four teams play a 10-game regular-season schedule. O’Connell will not play Wakefield or Yorktown.

O’Connell added different non-conference opponents to its schedule this season from last year in St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes of Alexandria and Washington High School from Charles Town, W.Va.
